Why is Music Important?
Why is Music important? Sometimes we take music for granted, we listen to it on the way to work or while in the shower, even during the holidays when we are decorating our trees or spending time with family. Have you ever stopped to think about the fact that it isn’t just background noise, music is an integral part of our lives and our society. There are several reasons why music is important and therefore music education is so important:
- Music is academic; that’s right, music can and does make you smarter. Children who took music lessons actually scored 27% higher on math and tests than those who had no music lessons or training. Music helps mould young minds.
- Music is therapeutic; music has proven to help in the rehabilitation of everything from physical injuries to emotional trauma to brain injuries as well. Music is powerful beyond what we can understand or imagine.
- Music is universal; it is a language that is understood from coast to coast and that is an important part of almost every culture. Music is communicative and important in cross cultural understanding, communication and development.
- Music is entertaining; if you have ever muted your favourite movie or show or tried watching it without music or sounds, surely you’ve been disappointed. Music has an enormous impact on the way movies, shows, plays, tv and other forms of entertainment resonate with us as an audience.
- Music is art; art is important for expression, creativity and for an innovative society. Music is something that can be discussed and dissected and understood. It is a great way for people to express themselves whether they create music or they listen to it.
