Heavy Events 2011

This year’s heavy events went down really well with the crowd, despite the weather getting worse as the afternoon wore on.

In all we had 6 competitors in the men’s event plus one guy who was put up to enter by his “mates” – he was on his ‘stag do’ and did really well. I hope his mates were impressed.

For the first time ever, we had two women: Louise Blades and Liz Elliott, doing a demonstration event and hopefully more women will compete in future.

As for the men, Neil Elliott came out on top with Daniel Carlin 2nd and Kyle Randalls 3rd. Three of the events set new records:

  1. Throwing 28lb weight for distance, Neil bettered his distance for last year throwing 25.28m.
  2. Throwing the 16lb Scots Hammer, where two competitors threw farther than the previous record. Gary Hagan set new best distance of 37.80m.
  3. Throwing the North Berwick Stane, there were three competitors within a cm of each other all beating last year’s record. The winning throw was by Gareth Care who threw 5.81m.

Given the distance that was thrown in the Scots Hammer, those pipe band judges are going to have to watch where they set up in future, as the distances get closer to their flimsy tents.

The full results are available using this link Results2011.

Saturday Car Parking

Hi, a couple of the marquees are up at the moment but most set-up has come to a halt while we wait on the heavy rain relenting. Parts of the site are starting to cut up.

Hopefully tomorrow’s forecast for a sunny, dry day is accurate. We could also do with a drying wind. The way things are just now, we will have to limit quite severely on-site car parking.

If you are thinking of coming from the Edinburgh area, or passing through/round Edinburgh please consider using the Saturday frequent bus and rail services. Trains are every 30 minutes after 9am. Pick up Service Bus 111 at the rail station in the town, it will drop you off at the site as will the regular service buses from Edinburgh. If you are coming up the A1 from the South, consider popping into Dunbar and picking up the regular Service Bus run by Eve Coaches.

Games and Toppers

In the run-up to this week’s Games the town is awash with Toppers.

That’s sailing boats to you and me. They started arriving last Thursday and comeptition started on Saturday. They’ve not had the best of wind (as opposedĀ  to weather) so far this week. Some of the crews held a ‘highland games’ last night, not a proper one, to the disappointment of a few – instead of tossing the caber they tossed a drainpipe.

For all the latest info on the event please read their daily blog and thanks for the link guys.

Latest Friday 29th July

The short range weather forecast suggests there may be some light rain on the day but we hope for the best.

The majority of arrangements are in place and the park will start to be made ready on Wednesday.

The Heavy Events have 6 competitors signed up with one women coming along to demonstrate that women can participate in this event too – using slightly different weights etc.

Also, we will have a tug-of-war competition taking place about 1pm.
