What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a field that has become increasingly popular. It is actually an evidence based use of music and musical interventions to help reach goals set on an individual and contextual basis. The therapy is completed by a professional who is accredited, educated and approved to conduct and assess the therapy.

It is used to help meet the wide range of physical, emotional, social and even cognitive or mental needs of patients all over the world. The use of music is dependent on the individual’s circumstance as this is not a one size fits all solution. The therapy can involve singing, listening to or creating music, among many other musical solutions.

The role of music therapy is still being researched but thus far has proven to be a solution that has greatly impacted (in a positive way) the physical rehabilitation but also provided a means of communication to those who may otherwise struggle to communicate or express themselves, such as those with autism or cognitive issues. Music therapy is great for children, adults and some studies have even been done on its role in pets such as dogs and cats.
