Heavy Events 2011

This year’s heavy events went down really well with the crowd, despite the weather getting worse as the afternoon wore on.

In all we had 6 competitors in the men’s event plus one guy who was put up to enter by his “mates” – he was on his ‘stag do’ and did really well. I hope his mates were impressed.

For the first time ever, we had two women: Louise Blades and Liz Elliott, doing a demonstration event and hopefully more women will compete in future.

As for the men, Neil Elliott came out on top with Daniel Carlin 2nd and Kyle Randalls 3rd. Three of the events set new records:

  1. Throwing 28lb weight for distance, Neil bettered his distance for last year throwing 25.28m.
  2. Throwing the 16lb Scots Hammer, where two competitors threw farther than the previous record. Gary Hagan set new best distance of 37.80m.
  3. Throwing the North Berwick Stane, there were three competitors within a cm of each other all beating last year’s record. The winning throw was by Gareth Care who threw 5.81m.

Given the distance that was thrown in the Scots Hammer, those pipe band judges are going to have to watch where they set up in future, as the distances get closer to their flimsy tents.
